The Owl Shop: Hawkins Jazz Collective

The Owl Shop in New Haven, CT is certainly an experience to be had, especially on the nights they host live music.  In fair warning, The Owl Shop is a smoke shop and cigar lounge.  If you can handle the smoke, you will enjoy the atmosphere.  I am not a smoker and found myself getting use to the air fairly quickly.  I even began to enjoy the aroma of sweet cigars!

The Owl Shop’s decor and furniture play a large part in the lounge atmosphere.  Dark wood, dim lighting, leather couches, a bar full of whiskey, and, of course, jazz.  The smoke in the air, pipes on display, tobacco, and cigars for sale provided a nostalgic feeling, with the live jazz pulling it all together. It felt like Al Capone could walk in any minute, wearing his pin-striped suit and fedora hat, feeling right at home.

The Owl Shop does serve food, although the menu focuses mostly on their coffee bar.  Paninis, imported cheese, cured meats, and handmade truffles are available to the hungry customer.

On Wednesday evenings the Hawkins Jazz Collective, a six-piece group, has a residency. If you enjoy live jazz you can stop by any Wednesday between 9pm-12am to unwind in the lounge and tap your foot to Gil Hawkins, Jr.- Drums, Joshua Bruneau- Trumpet/ Flugelhorn, Kris Jenson- Saxophones, Richard Goldstein- Guitar, Chris DeAngelis- Bass, and Adrian Tramontano-Percussion. Hawkins Jazz Collective is arguably one of the best jazz groups in CT.  The sound they produce transports you to another era!
